YOU ARE LOOKING AT DIVING IN THE PERHENTAINS, MALAYSIA THESE ARE THE REPORTS THAT DIVERS OF THIS AREA HAVE SENT TO US

Mick & Shaz September 2007

We booked a travel from Penang which included the bus and ferry. although it is easier enough to book the ferry when you get to Kulal Besult. The ferries are normally speed boats that take 8 to 20, but there is a lot of travel companies so getting there isn't a problem.

There are actually 2 islands, Kecil (small) & Basar (large), we stay on Basat which tends to be quieter perhaps catering to the more enthusiastic diver, or more mature traveller!!

We found the islands clean & pleasant and an escape from the mayhem of Singapore & KL. There are no ATMs on the island so bring cash! If you enjoy a drink I would recommend that you take some with you as drinking here is not cheap! Food is of an excellent standard but a bit higher than what you would probably pay on the mainland. The boats take  around 6 to 8 divers and  but as the dive sites are a maximum of 30 minutes away, the boat returns to the island after each dive, so food is not included in any dive trip although water, tea & coffee normally is.

We dived with 2 different dive shops; Flora Bay divers & Watercolours.

We found the diving very easy and mostly they put your equipment together for you (although we told them not to touch ours as we prefer to do it ourselves!) We saw lots of reef & bamboo sharks and good coral. We both preferred the diving here to Koh Tao, Thailand, and the visibility was better. We considered the dive briefings at Watercolours to be outstanding, providing us with clear ideas of what we would see, sea state & expected currents.

There is also more to do than diving so you could go kayaking and jungle trekking.

An excellent dive site was tokonlaut (temple of the sea) so try and fit this one in if you can. At 22 to 24 meters you are virtually guaranteed to see bamboo sharks.
