KOH SAMUI does have some local dive sites including the wonderful Sail Rock and dive trips are both local and also made to the dive sites of nearby Koh Tao. The main tourist areas are Chaweng and Lamai, on the east side of the island, while the smaller, and quieter areas of Boput, Maenam and Bang Po are in the north. Not yet displaying the nightlife of Patong or Pattaya the island does have it's fair share of watering holes and nightclubs.

There are good local dive sites around Koh Samui with Sail Rock being the most spectacular. Dive trips are also arranged to the nearby dives sites of Koh Tao.
WHERE TO STAY
Accommodation is mostly bungalow resorts, from the simple to the very expensive.
Chaweng is the best know and busiest area with the most nightlife and although the best beaches, it has suffered from development and is the most expensive area to stay.
Lamai, smaller & quieter than Chaweng on the Southern part of the beach still has some backpacker resorts.
Mae Nam, Big Buddha, Bo Phut to the North of Samui have good beaches and are generally much quieter than either Chaweng or Lami, with a wide range of accommodation.
TAKE ME THERE
Koh Samui has an airport, but it's not international so you leave from Bangkok's domestic terminal. Flights are also possible to and from other major Thai destinations such as Phuket, Pattaya & Chang Mai.
Other than flying, the most obvious place to reach Koh Samui is get the ferry from Surat Thani. From Bangkok, buses leave from the Southern bus terminal, or trains leave from Hua Lam Pong station to Surat Thani. Combined bus or train/bus ferry tickets are available. Once at Surat Thani unless you purchased a combined ticket, you will need to buy a ferry ticket to Samui. There are several companies offering crossings from different piers and different arrival points on Samui.
There are ferries to/from Koh Tao.
