LOGISTICS
Regardless of where you stay the dive shops will pick you up from your hotel. Most diving is on liveaboard boats, but day trips, normally by speed boat, also run to the nearer islands of the Similans.
Khaolak (70 km north of Phuket airport) is an excellent relaxing location as a departure point to the best diving in Thailand: the Similan Marine National Park Islands. The islands are situated only 60 km west from the main land. Khaolak is the closest point Thailand has to offer to the Similan Islands
WHERE TO STAY
There has been much rebuilding since the tsunami and accommodation is spreading out from the centre, Nang Thong. Khoa Lak itself is about three miles away from the centre and there are some places to stay. Bang Niang is leading the way in upmarket hotels, leaving Nang Thong as the centre.
This area is no longer the not budget place it once was although during the monsoon season prices are heavily discounted by those places that remain open.
TAKE ME THERE
This is reachable by road from Phuket and buses leave the Phuket town bus station several times a day. Government buses also run from the Bangkok's southern bus terminal, Surat Thani and Ranong. Travel agents will also run mini buses from Phuket
KOH LAK is situated next to the Similans and Surin islands this is an ideal place to dive these world class sites. Although three separate areas, the whole area is generally referred to as Khoa Lak with the centre being Nang Thong beach. Accommodation is not really in the budget category. The whole area, including much of the diving, generally closes down during the low season, although substantial discounts are available from those places that are open.
