Phuket has diving all year round and is a base for liveaboards to the Similans & Surin islands, as well as Burma. The three main areas in Phuket are:Patong, Karon, & Kata. Patong is the largest place with the most nightlife followed by Kata and Karon. Wherever you stay, the dive operator will pick you up for day trips, which depart from Chalong, and liveaboards which have different departure points.

LOGISTICS
Regardless of where you stay, dive shops will pick you up from your hotel or guest house for day trips, and live aboards. Day trips to local sites (not Similans) depart from Chalong Bay and you will be transported there (30 minutes or so) to meet your boat. Daytrips to the Similans depart from Khoa Lak (Tampa Lamu) and you will be transported there (around two hours). Liveaboards may depart from Chalong, Phuket, or Khoa Lak (Tampa Lamu), check with your dive shop.
For shore dives, long tail dives, and courses you may be expected to make your own way to the dive shop. Not all shops offer shore and long tail dives, so you may have to shop around for these.
WHERE TO STAY
Main areas are PATONG, KARON, & KATA. There are also a number of 5 star hotels both in and outside of the main areas. Phuket is no longer the cheap backpacker place it once was, but outside of the main Xmas period, accommodation is still reasonable with bungalows and guest houses providing the cheaper accommodation.
Kata & Karon provide the more relaxed areas, while Patong is famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view!) for it's night life.
TAKE ME THERE
Phuket has an international airport, but most people travel from Bangkok. Planes, trains (almost!) and buses all go to Phuket.
Trains leave Bangkok from Hua Lam Phong train station and are sleeper trains. You should get a combined train/bus ticket as Surat Thani is as close to Phuket as the train goes which is 4 hours away.
Buses depart Bangkok, Surant Thani, Ranong & points in between and vary from local,
air con, to VIP. Khoa San Road travel agents run cheapies, but these generally leave
you in the middle of nowhere surrounded by tuk tuks! The government bus station is
generally a better & safer bet. Between 6am -
Flights are much cheaper now ; Check out Air Asia and Nok Air, however, a 15 kilo luggage allowance is strictly enforced!.
