RANONG

wp6f0428c4.gif A ONE DIVING

Liveaboards to Similan & Surin islands and the Burma banks. This is as close to Burma as you can get and still be in Thailand!

The island of Phayam does have accommodation in Yai Gulf, Khoa Kwai Gulf and Hin Kao Gulf.

As far as we are aware, there are no dive shops here (amazing I know!). These sites can be booked at A One Diving and dived out of Ranong.

 LOGISTICS

Ranong is not overrun with dive shops, just two at the moment, mostly offering liveaboards. They do also offer day trips to the island of Phayan.

If you are thinking of diving May to September, check with the dive shop first as the monsoons restrict diving operations. Also, there is no diving on Phayan at that time and even the ferries are liable to be cancelled

WHERE TO STAY

There are plenty of guest houses and a few hotels located on the main street. Small bars also have rooms above them for rent. Much cheaper then Phuket and certainly Khoa Lak.

The main accommodation, and the town is a short walk away from where the bus drops you. There are, of course, plenty of motorcycle taxis to take you anywhere but it is only a 10 minute walk into the town.

Koh Phayam has some bungalow resorts but it is very quiet April till October

TAKE ME THERE

Ranong does have an airport some 20K outside of town, but most people arrive by bus. This is about half way between Phuket and Bangkok and is worth a stop if only to break up the long run to Bangkok.

The buses from Phuket & Khoa Lak, which do not terminate here, stop by the side of the road rather than enter the bus station so look out for your stop!  For some reason, buses to Bangkok & Phuket do seem to leave from the bus station!

Most places can arrange trips to Myanmar to renew a visa, but you can also do this yourself a bit cheaper. Beware, you are only allowed 3 no visa entries as of 2007.

RANONG is a town near the Myanmar border and as such it is closest to dive sites in Myanmar and Surin islands. There are local dive sites on the island of Phayam, but if you are diving here, is probably is going to be a liveaboard to Burma or Similans. There is plenty of cheap accommodation plus a couple of upmarket places.  Popular because of it’s day trips ( 3 hours here and back) to Myanmar for visa renewals, you will find food  drink much cheaper than the tourist spots.

YOU ARE LOOKING AT DIVING IN RANONG, THAILAND. CLOSEST POINT TO MYANMAR. THERE ARE SOME LOCAL DIVE SITES ON A NEARBY KOH PHAYAM, PEOPLE ARE MOSTLY HERE FOR LIVEABOARDS
